(WESH, NBC NEWSCHANNEL)-- An Orange County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after being shot on Tuesday.
Deputies were serving warrants related to robberies of several elderly women.
The twenty-year-old robbery suspect fired as deputies tried to take him into custody.
Four deputies returned fire and the gunman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sergeant Richard Stelter was hit several times and was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he is in stable condition.
According to officials, the gunman has a violent criminal history and was recently released from jail.
The four deputies involved in the shootout has been placed on paid administrative leave.
