Palm Beach County coronavirus death toll up 1 to 122; state passes 800

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Coronavirus deaths in Palm Beach County rose by 1 to 122 as state fatalities increased by 49 to 823 but the number of cases slowed, the Florida Department of Health announced Monday night.

The cases in Florida rose by 744 to 26,660, which is a 2.3 percent gain -- compared with a 6 percent increase on Friday. In Palm Beach County, the numbers increased by 90 to 2,260 Monday.

A total of 267,957 have been tested in the state with 239,565 negative results to fall below double digits to 9.9 percent compared with 10.3 percent Friday. Palm Beach County's positive rate is 13 percent.

Two massive testing sites are located in Palm Beach County: the South County Civic Center and FITTEAM Ballpark in West Palm Beach. Other big testing sites at located at Marlins Park and Hard Rock Stadium in Miami-Dade County.

Miami-Dade County has the most deaths in the state, increasing by 16 to 223 in one day. Tied for second is Palm Beach County with Broward County, which rose to 122 with an increase of 7.

Twenty-five of the additional 49 deaths are linked to South Florida, including one fatality announced in Indian River County to four: a 92-year-old man. The death count remained the same elsewhere on the Treasure Coast: 4 in Martin, 15 in St. Lucie and none in Okeechobee.

South Florida accounts for 490 deaths, which is 59.5 percent of the state total though the population comprises 30 percent.

The mortality rate involving positive cases is 3 percent in the state compared with 5.4 percent in the United States and 6.9 worldwide. In Palm Beach County the rate is 5.4 percent compared with 3 percent in Broward and 2.3 percent in Miami-Dade. With much fewer deaths the mortality rate is 7.4 percent in St. Lucie, 4.7 percent in Indian River and 2.6 percent in Martin.

On Monday morning, the state announced 15 additional deaths and 34 more in the evening update. In Palm Beach County, one more death was announced at night, a 66-year-old woman.

The state death toll increased by 6.3 percent. The record number of deaths was 72 last Tuesday.

The deaths in the state range from a 26-year-old man in Miami-Dade to a 101-year-old woman in Miami-Dade County. Ninety-three percent of the fatalities are 55 and older and 55 percent 75 and older.

Florida ranks 10th in the nation in total deaths and 10th in increase of deaths from the day before, according to Friday tracking by Worldometers.info. New York leads with 18,929 deaths, including 631 additional fatalities Monday.

Florida is 526 behind No. 9 Illinois.

In all, 42,514 have died from the virus in the United States, which is an increase of 1,939.

The U.S. represented 25 percent of the world total and 36.1 percent of the additional deaths. Italy, which at one time was an epicenter of the virus, is second in the world but the nation gained only 1.9 percent with 454 more deaths. No. 3 Spain increased 399 fatalities for a 2.0 percent gain. China, the original epicenter, reported no new deaths Monday and is now at 4,632.

On week ago in the United States, there were 23,640 deaths total compared with 10,895 two weeks ago, 3,150 three weeks ago, 556 four weeks ago, 87 five weeks ago, 26 six weeks ago and 6 seven weeks ago.

Palm Beach County's death count is higher than 19 states and the District of Columbia. The deaths range from a 38-year-old man to a 96-year-old woman.

The county's total number of confirmed cases are wide-ranging, with the youngest person being an infant girl and boy and the oldest a 104-year-old man. In the state, there are 119 cases of children up to 4.

West Palm Beach leads Palm Beach County with 421 cases, followed by Boca Raton with 358, Delray Beach with 297 and Boynton Beach with 296. The most cases on the Treasure Coast are in Port St. Lucie with 134.

Palm Beach County has 2,260 cases out of 17,625 total tested, including those awaiting results.

Miami-Dade County leads with 9,657 positive cases out of 59,380 tested, and Broward County is second with 4,078 cases and 34,901 tested.

On the Treasure Coast, only 7 additional cases were reported Monday.

In St. Lucie County, it's 204 positive out of 2,369 total tested, followed by Martin County with 155 out of 1,394, Indian River County with 85 out of 1,347 and Okeechobee County with 7 out of 266.

A total of 4,000 people in the state have been hospitalized at one time, which is up from 3,813 the day before . That means it is a running total and includes people who have been released or died. The number is 369 in Palm Beach County, 61 in St. Lucie County, 39 in Martin County, 24 in Indian River County and 4 in Okeechobee County.
