(WESH/NBC) - Deputies in Volusia County are searching for a man suspected of shooting and killing a K-9 Tuesday night.
The dog suffered the fatal gunshot in Deltona, Fla., while chasing down an armed suspect.
Officers were in the area on a Crime Stoppers tip looking for a wanted fugitive.
After they had set up a perimeter, a police helicopter spotted the suspect as the K-9 started tracking him.
That's when the suspect fired at deputies wounding the K-9.
The dog was rushed to an animal hospital but could not be saved.
Investigators said they have the suspect surrounded while law enforcement works to apprehend the shooter.
