Report: 4 dead, at least 25 injured after crash between bus and semi truck near Tallahassee

UPDATE: The driver of the bus,  Elie Dupiche of Belle Glade, injury status has changed from critical to serious, according to the Florida highway Patrol.

Initially it was reported there were 5 fatalities which is now determined to be incorrect. There are  4 confirmed fatalities at this time, officials said Sunday.

EARLIER STORY:

Five people were killed and at least 25 were injured following an early morning crash in the Panhandle Saturday. 

Officials say the accident happened at 5:30 a.m. at Coastal Highway and Woodville Highway, in Wakulla County. 

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a bus, from Georgia,  transporting approximately 34 people, including the driver, ran a flashing red light and a stop sign at the intersection and was struck by a semi truck. Both vehicles hit a pole and caught fire.

The driver of the bus was identified as 56-year-old Elie Dupiche of Belle Glade. He was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital in critical condition. 

The driver at the truck, 55-year-old Gordon Sheets, died of his injuries. His passenger, 21-year-old Rafael Nieves of Sound Beach, New York, did not suffer any injuries. 

The Wakulla County and Leon County fire departments and ambulance personnel responded to the scene. FHP was assisted by the Wakulla County and Leon County Sheriff departments. 

Traffic Homicide Investigators are investigating the accident and in the process of identifying the names of the passengers.
