(WJHG, NBC NEWSCHANNEL) A normal walk on the beach turned into a discovery for beachgoers in Port St. Joe, Florida this weekend as they discovered thousands of starfish washed up on shore.
"We saw what looked to be a whole lot of shells that had washed up, but it was actually thousands of starfish," Susan Whiten said. "I just couldn't imagine that there would be any starfish left as many as we saw. It was just unbelievable."
"I've never seen it like this before," Mike Forbess, a resident from Callaway, said. "There's just thousands upon thousands of them. We walked on the beach for maybe a quarter mile, and it was just solid dead starfish."
Researchers say that environmental factors such as temperature changes could be to blame.
Officials plan to study the area to try and gain further insight into what occurred.
