(WSVN/CNN) - A South Florida diving instructor and boat captain captured on camera a pod of about 30 pilot whales off the coast of Miami-Dade County.

The instructor, Arie Derzavich, recorded the video about 20 miles off the coast of Bal Harbour.

"It was one of my highlights. I was so excited to do it. I couldn't believe that it happened to me,” said Derzavich.

He called his wife, Sharon, to tell her about his experience.

"He was screaming over the phone. I didn’t know if something was happening in a bad way, and I’m like, 'Calm down and tell me what's going on.' He was like a little kid in a candy shop, screaming like crazy,” said Sharon Derzavich, Arie's wife.

Arie said he even tried to communicate with the whales.

"The video is very, very impressive, and you see so many," said Sharon.

In his 17 years as an instructor, Arie said he has never seen anything like this.

"To see them like that all together, normally they are by themselves, between two or three, but when I saw a huge pile, I couldn't believe it," said Arie.

Arie said he hopes the video helps to bring others closer to the wonders of nature.
