INDIAN RIVER COUNTY, Fla. — A 42-year-old Okeechobee man riding a bicycle was killed in a crash with a vehicle near Vero Beach early Friday night, the Indian River Sheriff's Office said.
The crash occurred at 5:25 p.m. at Fourth Street and Old Dixie Highway, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.
Deputies and Fire Rescue were on the scene of a crash at the intersection, which was closed temporarily.
The vehicle, driven by a 54-year-old woman from Vero Beach, was traveling northbound on Old Dixie Highway approaching Fourthth Street. A 15-year-old girl was a passenger.
The bicyclist was traveling west from the Chevron gas station at 455 Fourth St. on Old Dixie Highway.
The bicyclist failed to yield the right of way and traveled into the path of the sedan, FHP said. The front of vehicle came to afinal rest facing north in the northbound lane and the cyclist was thrown off the bike, coming to a rest in the intersection where he was pronounced deceased.
The bicyclist wasn't wearing a helmet.
