The shooter, another adult male, stayed on the scene and was questioned at the sheriff's office.

The victim, identified as Ernie Smith, died at the hospital.

Deputies told WPTV's Michael Hoffman that the shooting happened around 6 p.m., when there was an altercation between the two men.

“We know they had some type of beef with each other, but we're not sure what that is,” said Sheriff John Budensiek. “If you know anything about this incident or previous incidents, please reach out to the Martin County Sheriff's Office with your information so we can help unravel or piece together what took place here.”

The sheriff says Smith was a staple in the community, known for his BBQ business on the corner of Pettway and SE Dixie Highway in Hobe Sound.

At the scene, Hoffman spoke with Smith’s sister, Gail Horner. She says she didn’t want her face on camera but was comfortable sharing her identity.

“It really hasn’t set in yet,” said Horner. “[Ernie] has a history. We all have a past, but he was getting himself together. He was working hard doing his BBQ stand.”

She did tell Hoffman that there was quite a bit of tension between the two cousins. She says her brother leaves behind four kids.

“I’m just sorry it happened,” said Horner. “I’m sorry it happened. And like I said to him, I wish [the suspect] had listened. Just let it go, walk away.”

So far, no charges have been filed.
