STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Kay Jewelers says it’s sorry about a situation in North Carolina in which workers at one of its stores wouldn’t let a deputy pick up an engagement ring -- because he was wearing his service weapon.

The Iredell County Sheriff's Office posted details about the Tuesday incident on Facebook.

It reports a uniformed deputy went to the Kay store in Statesville during a lunch break to pick up the ring he had purchased. The manager met the deputy at the door and said he couldn’t enter unless he ditched the weapon. The deputy replied that removing the gun would violate department policy. The standoff ended without the deputy getting the ring.

It’s unclear whether the deputy has since returned for the bauble -- and whether he was allowed to do so while armed for duty.
