At least 40 people were killed when an overcrowded bus plunged from a bridge into a canal in central India.

Six people were rescued after the accident.

46 people were on the bus designed for 34 passengers.

Authorities are trying to find out why the driver lost control of the bus.

The accident happened at around 7:30 in the morning local time.

Only 32 victims have been identified.

More than 110,000 people are killed in highway accidents in India every year.
