DALLAS--  A would-be carjacker is in the hospital after the mother police say he was trying to rob shot him.

It happened Wednesday in Dallas after the woman stopped at a gas station with her two kids.

She went inside, then saw the man get into the car with her children and start to pull away.

She ran out and jumped into the backseat.

Unable to make the suspect stop the car, she got her gun out of the glove box and shot him in the head.

The vehicle crashed into a telephone pole, but neither the woman or her kids were injured.

"I should have emptied the whole clip, but I didn't. I didn't. I just wanted to give him a warning shot that was it. I'm not a killer or anything like that, but I do believe in defending what's mine," said the woman.

The suspect, Rickey Wright, remained hospitalized in serious but stable condition Thursday.

Authorities have charged him with unlawful restraint and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Police questioned the woman at the scene and then told her she was free to go, according to KTVT.
