The Popocatepetl volcano in central Mexico exploded Sunday night, spewing incandescent rocks and ash into the sky.

According to a report by Mexico's national disaster prevention center, the eruption reached a height of 6,562 feet.

Volcanic rocks were sent flying 11,482 feet from the blast.   Authorities are warning that ash could fall in nearby communities.

According to the report, the volcano has registered 40 exhalations over the last 24 hours.

Authorities confirmed Sunday that a large dome of lava formed back in January has been destroyed during recent explosions.

The Popocatepetl volcano is located just 50 miles southeast of Mexico City, and is one of the country's most active volcanoes.
