A volcano in Indonesia erupted Sunday, spewing ash and smoke as high as 13,000 feet into the sky and forcing hundreds of residents to seek refuge.

The country's disaster mitigation agency said the eruption from the Mount Ile Lewotolok volcano had caused panic among those living nearby.

It said more than 2,700 people from 26 villages sought refuge, although no casualties have been reported.

The status of the volcano has been raised to the second-highest level on Indonesia's four-tier alert system due to "increasing threats".
