LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. — By purchasing a Thanksgiving pie, the Meals on Wheels annual Pie it Forward! campaign enables the organization to feed seniors hot meals for a week for a donation of $30.
"Some of these seniors aren't getting human contact," said Meals on Wheels spokesperson Maura Sartory. At times, she said it's the only contact they get for a week. "It's nutrition and it's a wellness check that human interaction."
The grassroots effort involves several organizations including the Girl Scouts who decorate the pie boxes and the Palm Beach School for Autism's students who help fold pie boxes.

"This is actually good for our students, because they're all on the autism spectrum, so when they can get involved in things like this, it really helps their employability. It shows what they're capable of, and how just how much, how involved they can be in these community activities," said Patrick Pierre Jr. who is a spokesperson for the Palm Beach School for Autism.
This is the 10th year the Duffy's Foundation has been involved, "We prepare 350 meals a day to be delivered," said Geri Emmett, Chairwoman for Duffy’s Foundation. "Duffy's [Sports Grill] is the largest provider of pies for this particular event, but every single pie, knowing that it's going to feed a senior is so important to us at Duffy's."
There are only a few dozen pumpkin pies left and the event ends on Nov. 18.
