Hurricane season was everything we expected it to be

The last day of November is also the last day of the Atlantic hurricane season.

All said and done, there were 11 named storms, four of which were hurricanes and one became a major hurricane.

A typical Atlantic hurricane season averages about 12 named storms, six hurricanes and between two and three major hurricanes.

This year turned out to be a relatively quiet season thanks to a growing El Niño.

The National Hurricane Center took this into account when it created its initial forecast in May and in its August update.

As you can see, they pretty much nailed it.

On top of the quiet season, only two storms made landfall in the United States this year - Tropical Storm Ana in May and Tropical Storm Bill in June.

After June, the United States saw a few close calls, but no more direct hits.

This year continued the long stretch of quiet hurricane activity for the United States. The last hurricane to make landfall was Isaac in 2012.
