November tornado outbreaks are rare, but they happen

Posted

The Veteran's Day severe weather outbreak resulted in 10 tornado reports and more than ten times the number of wind damage reports.

By November standards, this was a big severe weather day.

It was almost two years ago to the day that the Midwest saw another severe weather outbreak, but this one was much worse by comparison.

There were many more tornado and wind reports, and it was spread out across more states.

This time of year is when severe thunderstorms are few and far between, but they don't typically go away completely.

The average number of tornadoes decreases significantly during the month of November, but a number of states still commonly see at least one or two tornadoes.

The fall season is one of transition, and that can make for prime severe thunderstorm conditions. That is, until the cold grip of winter fully takes hold.
