Perseid meteor shower peaking now

Posted

If you look up Tuesday or Wednesday night, and you're lucky enough to have clear skies, you'll be able to witness one of the best meteor showers all year.

The Earth is going to pass through the thickest part of the Perseid meteor shower today and Wednesday, and it just so happens a new moon is only a few days later.

That means anyone away from cities and other man-made light will have an unobstructed view of nature's show, and could view up to 100 meteors every hour.

Not everyone's viewing conditions will be equal thanks to the amount of cloud cover.

Tuesday night:

Wednesday night:

The Great Lakes, Ohio and Tennessee Valleys as well as the Northern Plains will all have the best viewing conditions with hardly a cloud in the sky both nights.

Unfortunately for the Northeast and the Four Corners region, cloudy skies will likely obscure viewing conditions Tuesday night, but Wednesday night should bring fewer clouds.
