What is a Derecho? A Storm Shield meteorologist explains

There is an elevated risk for a Derecho today in Lower Michigan, Northern Indiana and Northeast Ohio.

What exactly is a Derecho?

It's large-scale weather event that concerns winds and can cause a lot of damage — more than that of a tornado and even a hurricane, said Storm Shield Meteorologist Jason Meyers. It's a big risk.

Damaging winds and large hail are the main threats.

Meyers tells what exactly a Derecho is (and it's rarity) in this archived video from one year ago when one was expected in multiple states.
