Roughing it is part of what makes camping so appealing. You get to be one with nature, stand up to the elements and survive the way your ancestors did before you. But if sleeping on the cold, hard ground isn’t appealing to you, you have other options. And we don’t mean renting a cabin or buying an RV.
You can have your tent and be off the ground, too. A company called Kamp-Rite takes traditional tent camping up a notch with a product they call a tent cot.
These tent cots have a sturdy aluminum frame that lets you sleep nearly a foot off the ground. Not only is the cot more comfortable than a sleeping bag (or deflated air mattress), but it also provides protection from moisture, creepy-crawlers and even snow, as shown in this Instagram post.
“Snow on the ground at the campsite?” posted Kamp-Rite. “We’ve got you covered!”
Made of heavy-duty nylon, the tent cots are fully enclosed, with windows or doors on all sides. There’s even a double tent cot, which allows two people to sleep comfortably in the great outdoors. One person can easily set up the product, which folds into a compact, manageable size.
If you’re stuck at home, you could even pitch the tent cot in your own yard for the kids or for yourself. Jay Bowman showed his backyard setup.
“Too hot inside, so I grabbed the @kamp_rite tent cot and a drink,” he posted.
Another clever way to use the tent cot is in the bed of a pickup. Dane Tessler shared a picture of his setup, which he placed on a combination of milk crates and 2-by-4s in the bed of his truck and then strapped to his fenders.
“Penthouse Suite,” he posted.
The Kamp-Rite double tent cots measure 53 inches wide, 84 inches long and 40 inches high when set up. They collapse to a folded size of 56 inches wide by 34 inches long by 8 inches high. You can get one on Amazon for about $360.
