St. Lucie County to open shelters for Hurricane Ian

ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — Leaders in St. Lucie County are preparing for the potential impact from Hurricane Ian.

On Wednesday at 10 a.m., county leaders will open up three shelters for those subject to flooding.

A general population shelter will open at Fort Pierce Central High School.

A pet shelter will also be open at Fort Pierce Westwood Academy.

County leaders announced that a medical special needs shelter will open at the Havert L. Fenn Center off Virginia Ave.

County offices will remain closed for the day. However, residents with hurricane related questions can contact the county's public information hotline at 772-460-4357 beginning at 7 a.m.

County leaders said parks and attractions will be closed. No lifeguards will be on duty at area beaches.

The county landfill will remain open and garbage trucks will continue to operate weather permitting.

HURRICANE WARNING: An announcement that hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected somewhere within the specified coastal area. A hurricane warning is issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset of tropical-storm-force winds.
