You shut your mouth when you’re talking to me! Can it really be true? Is there a “Wedding Crashers 2” headed our way?
When “Wedding Crashers” came out in 2005, it became a cult comedy classic almost overnight. Written by Steve Faber and Bob Fisher, the film went on to earn more than $288.5 million worldwide and was said to be responsible for helping to revive the popularity of R-rated, adult-oriented comedies.
And now it’s official: there is a “Wedding Crashers 2” in the works, meaning we can finally catch up with Jeremy Grey, John Beckwith, Todd Cleary, Chazz Reinhold and all of our other favorite characters from the hilarious film.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight last week, Vaughn confirmed that he and pal Owen Wilson are indeed playing with the possibility of a sequel.
“Owen and I and the director of ‘Crashers’ have been talking for the first time seriously [about] a sequel to that movie,” Vaughn said. “There has been an idea that is pretty good. So we are talking about that in the early stages.”
The 50-year-old Vaughn (who stars in the new Blumhouse Productions horror movie “Freaky”) revealed that he has been hesitant to participate in a “Wedding Crashers” sequel, but that he was won over when he heard of director David Dobkin’s idea for the film.
“David Dobkin had a really good idea that’s contemporary,” Vaughn told Cinema Blend. “I never went and made a sequel to a lot of these films at the time because it felt like we were just chasing a success. But what I like about where ‘Crashers’ could potentially be at is [that] there’s something that is of this moment that feels really good … a lot of these comedies, even something like ‘Wedding Crashers,’ you’re sort of investigating things that I think are real in our lives, but the comedy is an overcommitment to the absurd.”
In June 2020, a Collider interview with director David Dobkin indicated that his idea for a sequel might explore “what it’d be like for guys in their late 40s who end up being single again and have to go back out in the world. What a weird, difficult, challenging story that is.”
In addition to the prospect of “Wedding Crashers 2,” co-star Owen Wilson also starred in another much-anticipated sequel to a beloved early aughts comedy, the follow-up to 2001’s “Zoolander.” The 2016 sequel, “Zoolander 2,” showed Wilson can still be as zany, lovable, and hilarious as ever.
Here’s hoping the “Wedding Crashers” sequel can retain all the laughs (and all the romance!) of the original.
